Mission and History
SCHOOL OF OUR LADY MISSION STATEMENT
School of Our Lady is a K-8 Roman Catholic Parish School, serving families in Santa Ana , California and other nearby communities. Our mission is to create a safe, Catholic, Christian environment in which students are able to hear and live the Gospel message and receive a well-rounded education enabling them to become life-long learners who are confident, effective communicators, responsible citizens in the community, respectful of others, themselves and all of God's creation.
SCHOOL OF OUR LADY PHILOSOPHY
School of Our Lady, a Catholic elementary school, is committed to the education of the child. We strive to create an education responsive to the spiritual, intellectual, social, psychological, and physical needs of the student. Our aim is to provide opportunities for students to discover, explore, and develop their own God-given potential so that they will have a positive effect on society. Our task is to build sound foundations upon which our students can construct meaningful and purposeful lives. We do this in partnership with the parents who have the primary responsibility for the education of their children. Education at School of Our Lady promotes the formation of Catholic moral and religious values that will enable students to make Christian choices in an increasingly secular and pluralistic society. Our goal is to help the students to recognize themselves as children of God and to perceive that their personal, moral decisions can make positive contributions toward creating a better world.
BRIEF HISTORY OF SCHOOL OF OUR LADY
School of Our Lady is a Catholic school established in January of 2005 under the auspices of the Bishop of Orange, the pastors of Immaculate Heart of Mary, Our Lady of the Pillar parishes, the Office of Faith Formation for the Diocese of Orange and the principal of the school. It serves children from the two parishes and surrounding parishes. The school opened in the academic year 2005-06 with a K - 8 educational program.
The school is housed in a renovated 16 classroom facility on the grounds of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish. The grounds include a large asphalt playground with volleyball and basketball courts, a grass field that meets the requirements for flag football, and a covered lunch table area.
Immaculate Heart of Mary parish was established in 1960 and Our Lady of the Pillar Parish was established in 1965. Both parishes had functioning schools through the end of the school year 2005. At the request of the Bishop of Orange, a committee was formed to conduct an extensive study of the two schools in 2004. The study was based on diminishing enrollment and extensive financial support given from the parishes to the schools for operating expenses. Upon reviewing all of the data from the committee, a decision was made by the Bishop of Orange and his Executive Committee to merge the two schools which resulted in the formation of School of Our Lady.
School of Our Lady administration and faculty are certified, credentialed teachers in accordance with the standards set by the Institute of Pastoral Ministry for the Diocese of Orange and the California State Department of Education. The teacher/student class ratio at School of Our Lady is set at approximately 30 to 1, except in the primary class rooms where aides are utilized to help implement the academic program under the direction of the classroom teacher.
